INS Sudarshini: Second Sail Training Ship for Indian Navy Launched by Goa Shipyard

Goa_Shipyard_Limited Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) launched the second Sail Training Ship INS Sudarshini for the Indian Navy on January 25, 2011.

The first Sail Training Ship INS Tarangini, designed by Mr. Colin Muddie (a famous Naval Architect and yacht designer of U.K.) was built by GSL and commissioned on November 11, 1997.

Some interesting features of Sail Training Ship INS Sudarshini are:

  • ceremoniously launched by Smt Letha Sushil wife of Vice Admiral K N Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command at Goa.
  • is steel hulled, round bilged, three masted sailing ship, square rigged on the forward and main mast and fore and aft rigged on the mizzen mast with eighteen sails having a sail area of approximately 1035 square metres.
  • can be under sail or propulsion power or a combination of both.
  • can be deployed at sea continuously for a period of twenty days.
  • can accommodate 61 crew.
