On December 28, 2010, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India has successfully demonstrated its indigenous aerostat system capable of carrying electro-optic and COMINT payloads for surveillance. The system has been designed, developed and integrated by the Aerial Delivery Research & Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra Cantt, a premier laboratory under DRDO.
So far India has been relying on EL/M-2083 aerostat radars procured from Israel. Aerostat radar is portable and can act as an eye in the sky. It is very useful for surveillance of India’s vast coast line of around 7500 km.
