The 33 year old Russian nuclear powered icebreaker ‘Arktika’ has completed her active service this week officially and her propulsion reactors have been shut down by this weekend. Russian icebreaker fleet ensure safe navigation in the Eastern part of the Northern Sea Route, the sea line connecting port of Murmansk with other Russian Arctic ports. Arktika was the second nuclear powered icebreaker built in Russia.
Some of the interesting features of Arktika are:
- Arktika – the name is from a Nenets word meaning “End of the Earth”.
- The Arktika is the lead ship in the second generation nuclear propelled icebreakers (Project 10520).
- Her keel was laid on July 3, 1971 at Baltiisky Zavod in St. Petersburg.
- The ship was launched on December 26, 1972 and started active operations on April 25, 1975.

- Arktika was the first surface vessel to reach the North Pole on August 17, 1977.
- In 2000, Arktika broke the world record of staying amidst the ice for 357 days without entering her home port of Murmansk.
- Arktika had a fire accident in April 2007 that burnt three cabins and damaged an electricity distribution shield.
- To honour Arktika, there are wrist watches – Men’s Automatic Icebreaker Arktika Watches.
