The Service to America Medals (Sammies) are presented annually by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service to celebrate excellence in federal civil service. Honorees are chosen based on their commitment and innovation, as well as the impact of their work on addressing the needs of the nation. The medals for this year 2008 were awarded at a gala celebration in Washington, D.C. on September 16.

Some of the interesting features of Service to America Medals are:

  • The eight Medals and their purpose:
    • Career Achievement Medal: This medal recognizes a federal employee for significant accomplishments throughout a lifetime of achievement in public service.
    • Homeland Security Medal: This medal recognizes a federal employee for a significant contribution to the nation in activities related to homeland security (including border and transportation security, emergency preparedness and response, intelligence, and law enforcement).
    • Call to Service Medal: This medal recognizes a federal employee whose professional achievements reflect the important contributions that a new generation brings to public service.
    • Science and Environment Medal: This medal recognizes a federal employee for a significant contribution to the nation in activities related to science and environment (including biomedicine, economics, energy, information technology, meteorology, resource conservation, and space).
    • National Security and International Affairs Medal: This medal recognizes a federal employee for a significant contribution to the nation in activities related to national security and international affairs (including defense, military affairs, diplomacy, foreign assistance and trade).
    • Federal Employee of the Year: This medal recognizes a federal employee whose professional contributions exemplify the highest attributes of public service.
    • Citizen Services Medal: This medal recognizes a federal employee for a significant contribution to the nation in activities related to social services (including economic development and assistance, education, health care, housing, labor, and transportation).
    • Justice and Law Enforcement Medal: This medal recognizes a federal employee for a significant contribution to the nation in activities related to justice and law enforcement (including civil rights, criminal justice, counterterrorism, and fraud detection and prevention).
